RACING AT MARTON
GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED THE MARTON HANDICAP ROYAL BANQUET’S PROSPECTS. REVIEW OF CANDIDATES. (By “Hurry On.”) In view of the big spring meetings the racing at the Marton Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-day will be watched - with unusual interest. Many well known horses will be making their reappearance and their showings will be carefully noted. Proceedings open at 12 noon with the 12.0— OTAIRI PLATE. Of £5O. Nine furlongs.
The two topweights, Santoh and Gainsay, may monopolise the betting, but Royal Papa and Wyndale have speed and InvictUs usually races well after a spell. The favourites may be Gainsay and Santoft. T 2.40— MAIDEN RACE. Of £BO. Six furlongs. All 8.7. Ringapoto Cillef Ranger Mesurina Corroboree Earl Colossus Jean Batten Prevail Hard Times Going Gay Donegal Pukepapn False Witness In tiie Air The Image Black Magic Cloudy Bay Huntsman’s Chorus Golden Song Shu Hunting Song g. Popette Hunting Fox Fleeting Arrow Prevail possesses the best credentials of this field as on her last appearance she beat all but Wotan at Wanganui last February. Corroboree and Going Gay also gave promise last season. Of ■the older horses Hard Times, The Image, Shu and False Witness have shown some form. The best supported are likely to be Prevail, Hard Times and Corroboree. 1.30— HACK HURDLES. ' Of £6O. One mile and a-half.
Kaola won well at New Plymouth last Saturday and appears to be improving, but his task Is not going to be easy. Swift and Sure scored convincingly at Trentham, and Ganpat would only need to show a little improvement on his recent form to be In the picture. Clarion Call has a fair turn of speed, while Spender certainly knows how to jump. The main fancies may be Kaola, Swift and Sure and Spender. 2.0TUTAENUI HACK HANDICAP, Of £75. Six furlongs.
Reports from Hastings credit Hest and Hunting Cat with being in great order and galloping well, while Celerimus won in good style at Awapuni. Windward is always' a possibility. Waihine Nui likes the course and Bantrj ran a fine race ithe first day at New Plymouth. Speculation may take a wide range, with most money for Bantry, Hunting Cat and Hest. 243 MARTON HANDICAP.
This is rather a disappointing field but may provide a good contest. Lapel and Royal Banquet displayed good form during the winter and are likely to be fitter than their opponents. Lavington was good two seasons ago, but he has a doubtful leg. Cottesmore will have to be taken on trust over the distance, and Tres Sec may find the topweights too good. The favourites may be Royal Banquet and Lapel. 3 25 / SPRING HACK HANDICAP. Of £BO. Nine furlongs.
Taumau may require the race, but if reserved Santoft should go well. Trackman, whose form on the east coast was good, is an improver. Gay Boy and Windward are handily weighted and Midacre may prove the best of the lightweights. The populai fancies be Trackman, Windward and Gay Boy. 4.10RAILWAY HANDICAP. Of £9O. Six furlongs.
garding Curie, who is a class sprinter at his best. He should be able to account for West Tor, Passion Fruit and Slippery, but the three-year-old Heritage should go exceptionally well. Limulus on his home track will have a following, while Hunting Lodge may prove a surprise packet. Those to find most favour may be Heritage, Curie and Slippery. 4 45 FAREWELL HACK HANDICAP. Of £75. Five furlongs.
Pakanui • 8 1 Golden Song 7 0 Bodyline, Bazaine and Gold Gleam are all good beginners who can run out a merry five furlongs, but the three-year-old Pakanui is likeb to keep them all busy. Abbey Feale is a possibility, and Matrimony showed promise as a two-year-old last season. The best backed may be Bazaine, Gold Gleam and Pakanui.
TROTTING AT AUCKLAND GOOD FIELDS FOR TO-DAY CHANCES OF J. T. PAUL’S HORSES. INTEREST IN THE SADDLE RACE. (Special to Daily News.) Auckland,- Sept. 6. Owing to the likelihood of J. T. Paul’s horses, Great Admiral and Ringtrue, be- ' ing likely to monopolise the betting in i the Whitford and Franklin Handicaps, the Auckland Trotting Club has placed these events first and second respectively on the programme for to-morrow. B. the time the big race comes on the attendance will be at its best and the remaining fields should encourage spirited speculation. After a lapse of four years a saddle race has been included on the card, and the event is creating keen interest. The last race of this kind at Epsom was won by Raydus. A feature of the field is that the dams of Nelson Luvan, Tryment, Lucky Love and Peter Junior, all fancied candidates, were good saddle performers. Great Admiral’s 24 yards’ penalty for his easy win should not seriously hamper his prospects in the Whitford Trot. Mountain Sun and Mute may improve with the race, but they will have strong opposition from Great Admiral. On the handicaps Ringtrue, winner on the first day, has a good chance in the Franklin Handicap. War Paint ran a sound race last Saturday. Edna Worthy looked short of work, but she will hang on better. Wee Machine is a possibility, but the best supported may be Ringtrue and War Paint. First day form suggests a fine race in the Fergusson Handicap between Auto Machine, Smooger and Kewpie’s Triumph, and Nimbus will provide a good deal of interest. If Manoeuvre elects to go away right she may effect a surprise as she is in good order. If kept handy in the early stages Auto Machine may repeat his effort of last Saturday and may be better supported than Kewpie’s Triumph and Smooger. King’s Guide has a severe looking penalty of 48 yards, but he won so well that he has a chance of being again in the picture. Parochial and Aeriel Bell ran sound races on the .first day, while Snessiva, Proletarian and Worthy Song will be improved after their outing. Newcomers in Nellota and Frank Best may cause further interest, and Charteris Bay and Derby Fame may improve. Fancies will include Parochial, Aeriel Beil and Spessiva. Bismuth was disappointing on Saturday, but may decide to do better in the September Handicap, while Ken Worthy will give added interest to the event. King’s Play will find plenty of support and Our McKinney will be a better horse than previously. Bonny Azure is a smart pacer and both Ironside and Star Pronto threaten danger. In a good pool the favourites may be King’s Play, Bonny Azure and Our McKinney. With a littfe more solidness Nelson’s Glory and Native Princess will be troublesome in the Innovation Handicap. Nelson Chief may be a surprise packet.. After his easy win Audo Patch, let off with 24 yards, should hold Captain Bolt, who got 12 yards t for second, but, better handled, Worthy Nor may retrieve her first day’s defeat.' Afnong those best fancied may be Worthy Nor, Audo Patch and Captain Bolty Of the horses who contested the sprint last Saturday Smooger, Nimbus and Wee Machine, who filled the places, read best for the Papatoetoe Handicap, but calculations may be upset -through the presence of Auto Machine, Kewpie’s Triumph and Manoeuvre. If reserved for this race, Nimbus may find more support than Smooger and Kewpie’s Triumph. | Our McKinney’s prospects of starting in the Henderson Handicap depend on his efforts at his previous start, as he is giving away 24 yards. Nelson Luvan, Lucky Love and Tryment will take beating pff the limit, but Rockelle is likely to keep them busy. Whakahihi is well placed, but Haerenga Pai has no form for some seasons. Peter Junior is a rare beginner, but investors may prefer Nelson Luvan, Tryment and Lucky Love.
