WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Turitown: The monthly meeting was presided over by Mrs. W. Shaw, who welcomed visitors and new members. She reported on the recent meeting of the newly-formed Health Camp Association. It was decided to organise the street collection on Health Camp Day in October. An interesting travel talk by Mrs. H. T. Lovell was enjoyed. Mrs. F. C. King, secretary, and delegate to the Dominion conference gave a report on her visit to Auckland, The results of the monthly competitions were: Tumbler of flowers, Mrs. A. Murdoch 1, Mrs. Pollock 2; coat hanger, Mrs. Spink 1, Mrs. Ingram 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. Ackroyd, H. Cressey, Peterson and J. H. Baker. Normanby: The town hall presented a festive appearance for the institute's third birthday. The tasteful decorations of the hall, with its walks covered, with foliage and brightly hued flowers and its ceiling gracefully draped with streamers in the institute colours of green and gold, lent a carnival appearance. Credit was due to the committee, assisted by a small sub-committee. The visitors were received by the vice-presidents, Mesdames W. Gane, W. Bennett and A. J. Hopcroft. The president, Miss E. Free, welcomed the visitors. The following items were given: Pianoforte duet, Misses Barrow and Martin; song, Miss J. O’Brien; elocution, Miss A. Hall; song, Mr. Jensen (Patea); community singing led by Mrs. Morse and Misses A. Galloway and C. L. Hay; one-act play The Green Monkey,” drama circle, Mrs. | McEwen, Mrs. Adams. Miss P. McEwen, Miss C. Stewart, Mrs. A. J. Hopcroft, Mrs. A. Leydon; songs, Mr. Galloway; vocal duet, Misses P. and C. McEwen; Maori item, Mr. Holy; song, Mrs. W. A. Spragg; dance duo, Misses Cork-1 hill and Sansom; vocal duet, Messrs. Hay and Galloway. Accompaniments were played by Misses Chadwick and P.'

Gane and Mr. Hopcroft was announcer. At supper the chief guests were seated on the stage. A short outline of the year’s activities was presented by ths secretary, Mrs. V. F. Howell. The Mayor of Hawera, Mr. J. E. Campbell, offered helpful advice and encouragement to the institute. He congratulated the secretary on her report and the institute on the | success of the occasion. He stressed the value of the movement to the life of , the community. Others who offered i congratulations were Mr. Stewart (Normanby township), Mesdames McAsey (Taranaki federation and Te Roti), Larcom (Whareroa), Barrow (Ohawe), Meharry (Turuturu), Spragg (Taiporohenui), Thomas (Turitown) and members from Okaiawa and Tawhiti. Mrs. Peach, a former member of Normanby and now a member of the newly-formed Tauxnarunui Institute, brought greetings from the King Country. The president thanked the speakers for their kind wishes, specially mentioning Mr. Campbell’s helpful address. The performers were thanked. The candles on the cake were lighted by Mrs. Cleaver, senior member, and extinguished by Miss Connie Evans, the youngest member, after which, the cake was cut by the president and distributed by the vice-presidents. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. J. E. Campbell by Miss P. Gane and to the president and secretary by Mrs. Knuckey. An enjoyable dance programme was carried out to music by Mrs. Bennett and Mr. R. Hunger, Mr. W. H. Bennett being master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs. Rangiwahia and Mr. Jensen.

Mangatoki: There were 40 members present at the September meeting, Mrs. B. N. Linn presiding. A letter was received from Mr. L. O. Hooker asking for support for the health camp campaign. It was decided to ask each member for a donation. Mrs. C. A. Pease offered to take charge of the collections. The Stratford Horticultural Society advised of free tutorial classes in decorative work at Stratford. Mesdames H. and B. N. Linn were appointed delegates to the half-yearly council meeting at Stratford. Mesdames M. Sheerin and H. Linn and Miss J. Burke were appointed members of the committee. The stall-holders for the evening were Mesdames A. Bootten and L. Sulzberger. It was decided to hold a “bring and buy” stall at the October meeting, Mesdames C. Davies and H. Linn to be in charge. The proceeds are to form the institute’s effort to assist the federation’s funds. A working bee for the making of toys for the Christmas tree is to be held at the home of Mi's. S. G. Morgan. Each member was asked to supply her own three seed potatoes for the potato-growing competition. The roll call for the evening was sandwich fillings and many new and novel recipes were given. The drama circle presented a reading of S. Caldwell’s “Final Rehearsal,” those taking part being Mesdames H, and N. Linn, Misses E. Beech, J. Burke and I. Carlson. The competition for an article from felt was judged by Mesdames Banks, Tombleson and Hitchcock (Ohawe) and resulted: Miss J. Burke 1, Miss N. Beech 2, Miss G. Beech 3. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Phillips and D. Martin and Miss C. Phillips. Ngaere: At the monthly meeting Mrs. Kofoed presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. One new member was admitted. A letter was read from Mr. L. O. Hooker, secretary of the health stamp campaign, asking the assistance of members. It -was agreed that all members give a small donation in preference to holding a social evening. The roll call was “What would you do with £5.” Mrs. Watkins and Miss Bonner were appointed delegates to the federation meeting. There were 11 entries in the points competition for spring posies. This was judged by Mrs. Lester, who made the following awards: Mrs. J, Arthur 1, Miss Walker 2, Miss Pederson 3. There was to have been a demonstration on barbola work, but the demonstrator was unable to be present. An elocutionary item was given by Miss Ethel Newlovc, and a musical parcel game was won by Mrs. Pope. The hostessed for the afternoon were Mesdames Hobbs, Newlove, Pope and Miss Pennial.

Riverlea: Mrs. Hughes presided over the monthly meeting, the attendance being smaller than usual on account of the cold weather. Despite the scarcity of flowers, Mrs. Dagg, Kaponga, gave an interesting, demonstration of bouquet making. Mesdames Hughes and Chapman were elected delegates to the halfyearly council meeting. It was decided to held a bring and buy stall, the proceeds to be given to the children’s health camp fund, in response to Mr. L. O, Hooker’s appeal. A short community sing was held and a competition in the room was won by Mrs. Stables. Hostesses were Mesdames Mowat, Fasham, J. J. Malone and Miss P. Rothe.
