“CHUCKLES” AT MANAIA

REVUE TO BE. STAGED TO-NIGHT. Those who attend the revue “Chuckles” at Manaia to-night will be provided with entertainment which will more than repay them for their attendance. For variety and general excellence of performance, the programme to be submitted is one of tile best that has been staged by local performers in South Taranaki. Mr. C. W. Abbott's capabilities as a producer are well known and he has with him a company which has worked assiduously for some time to’ ensure the success of the venture. His effort of two years ago, the revue “Miles of Smiles,” achieved a reputation in a number of South and Central Taranaki towns and districts, and to-night’s effort is billed as “bigger, brighter and better than ever.” There is no first night performance in which to make experiments, so every member of the company is determined to give of his and her best to ensure the success of the show. “It’s all for the youngsters!” says the programme in alluding to the fact that the proceeds are to be equally divided between the Manaia State school and the children’s Christmas festivity fund. Singing and dancing are the chief features of the programme and there are a number of bright individual efforts. The dancing, carried out in some cases by the whole company and in others by selected ballets, is of a very high order, and some novel and artistic effects both in dress and in lighting are carried out in the massed scenes. A detective farce and a divorce court burlesque provide plenty of fun and enable the introduction of bright local “hits.” Two or three song and patter artists provide bright and humorous minutes, and two well-known male soloists sing more serious selections. Half a dozen children in the show provide good juvenile entertainment in song and dance, while the orchestra gives a swing to the performances by playing the accompaniments of the chorus items and also two overtures.
