CITY INVESTOR GUILTY TRIED TO BRIBE POLICE £lO,OOO OFFER ALLEGED BALLARAT BANK ATTEMPT By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 12.30 a.m. Melbourne, Sept. 5. Henry Stokes, described as an investor of Melbourne, was found guilty at Ballarat on a charge of conspiring to rob the Ballarat branch of the Commonwealth Bank. John Mulligan, similarly charged, was acquitted. The manager of the bank said there was from £BO,OOO to £lOO,OOO in the bank st times relating to the charge. Evidence for the prosecution alleged that offers of £5OOO and £lO,OOO were made to two constables, provided the job were successful, if the police stood on the footpath while the gear was got into the bank. The police pretended acquiescence in. the plan. The defence was that the accused men had nothing to d<s with the Allegation. They said the police made the proposition to them.
