WHITE GLOVES GIVEN
JUDGE IN WESTPORT COURT.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Westport, Last Night,
The quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day, Mr. Justice Northcroft presidingThe Crown Prosecutor, in the absence of a Grand Jury, presented His Honour with a pair of white gloves as there were no criminal cases on the calendar. His Honour is a West Coaster himself, and he said it was especially pleasing to him on that account to see such an absence of crime on the Coast. In two sittings at Greymouth and two at Westport practically no criminal cases had come forward.
The day was occupied with hearing a claim for damages amounting to £2098 9s 6d, Sherlock v. Shaw, arising out of a collision between a car driven by the latter and a motor-cycle driven by the late Hugh Hill with Sherlock as pillion rider. Sherlock suffered serious injuries, and the widow of Hill, who died some time after the accident, was recently awarded £1750 damages at Westport, but an appeal is proceeding.
