NEW GUINEA MUMMY REMAINS. OVER THOUSAND YEARS OLDFrom the dark depths of a cavern ages old and tucked away in lonely ranges in New Guinea the mummified remains of a man who was slain probably much more than 1000 years ago arrived at Brisbane recently. The mummy is that of a man about 5 feet 3 inches in height The head is slashed open across the forehead, indicating that death was caused by a swift blow from a native axe. Dr. E. T. Bennan, director of public health at > Rabaul, is in charge of the mummy, which will be handed to the Institute of Anatomy, Canberra. “There are hundreds of these mummies in a limestone cave in the Buang Range, a day and a-halFs walk from Salamaua,” Dr. Bennan said. “I knew that they were there some' time befone Dr. J. R. Atcherley, formerly of the New Guinea Administration, reported their discovery. His discovery recently, confirmed information I had of their ; existence. The discovery is of worldwide interest.”
