REVEILLE A SUCCESS
FINE VARIETY PERFORMANCE. MANY OUTSTANDING NUMBERS. The third night of “1935 Reveille” at New Plymouth was a success, mainly due to the whole-hearted way into which the 260 performers threw themselves. into their parts and by the clever lighting effects and lavish costuming. Items followed in quick succession and their variety from ballets to humorous sketches kept a large audience in a very good humour for the whole of the three hours. The amateurs showed an increasing confidence. Originality in the costuming and numbers—for instance, the girls in the streamline ballet dressed in sharp lined tights of black and white, followed a number in which grotesquely dressed scarecrows cut painful attitudes to jerky music—kept up that air of uncertainty that goes a long way towards the success of any production. One of the most popular items was that in which little Norma McCartney took part. For a child of her very tender years her piquant exhibition of tapdancing was remarkable, and her steps were faultless and in perfect time. Many a laugh was raised by the humour and unexpected endings of items in which Mrs. Kircher and Mr. St. Leger Reeves, Mrs. Birch-Johnston, Mr, G. Ovenden and Mr. R. Richards took part. Mr. Richards especially showed originality, and his sly side-plays to the audience made him a popular member in the teams. f Miss Elwyn Riley gave a polished and unique number in a unique costume besides her usual clever dancing, and Mrs. Quay gave fine exhibitions of suppleness. With the singing of well known artists, the comedy and mass numbers, the production is assured of receiving wholehearted support and appreciation in its two remaining sessions.
