SOUTHLAND UNLUCKY DRAW WITH WELLINGTON SIDE. DOMINATION BY THE FORWARDS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The touring Southland Rugby team was unlucky to lose its match against Wellington at Athletic Park to-day. It had things almost completely its own way in the second half, when the forwards were definitely on top of the Wellington pack. Once Purdue seemed to have touched the ball down after a solo effort, but Wellington managed to hang on to the end and the result was X- draw, 14-14. Wellington scored four tries, one converted, and Southland three tries one converted, and a penalty goal. Southland scored first, Galt touching down after a movement started by Purdue that swept nearly the length of the field. Purdue, Hamilton, Southern, Galt, Ward and Metcalfe joined in and Galt finished it. Hamilton missed with the kick. Wellington equalised almost immediately, Fleming cutting through and giving Hansen a clear run in. Lamason missed with the kick.
Wellington maintained the pressure and Hansen scored again from a passing rush by the backs. The speed and clean passing of the movement beat Southland. Wellington went further into the lead when Baldwin initiated a rush from halfway.’ B.aldwin, Fleming and Hansen handled before the wing three-quarter went over at the corner. Lamason could not goal. Then Thornbury scored after Irwin, Metcalfe, George and he had been let away through poor tackling and backing up by Wellington. Hamilton converted.
Southland was in Wellington’s half for the first 15 minutes of the second spell. Southland went into the lead when Smiley touched down after Lamason had kicked the ball into Lynch, who was trying to stop a forward rush. Pollock just missed a field goal, and then Kilby gave Fleming an opportunity to cut through and pass to McGreevy, who scored at the corner. Lamason succeeded with a difficult kick, but Southland evened the score when Nesbit kicked a penalty goal from well out. Purdue went for a run and was just tackled by McGreevy in time. The game ended with Southland making continued efforts to score. HAWKES BAY WINS EASILY. DEFEAT. OF WANGANUI TEAM. Marton, Last Night.
