DEATH OF MRS. WOOD
55 YEARS AT NEW PLYMOUTH. BORN IN TARANAKI IN 1860. The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Rebecca Wood at Wellington yesterday at the age of 75 removed another figure of New Plymouth’s early days. Born at New Plymouth in 1860, she lived in the town for 55 years. Mrs. Wood was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hammond. She married Mr. Thomas Wood, who was a printer at the Taranaki Herald Office. Two sons died in childhood, and when Mr. Wood died 30 years ago Mrs. Wood was left with a daughter six weeks’ old. She went to Wanganui about 1915 and later to Wellington, where she lived with her daughter, Miss D. Wood, until her death. Mrs. Wood leaves three sisters and three brothers, Mesdames Purvis (Wellington), O’Hara (Wanganui) and J. D. Sole (New Plymouth) and Messrs. Harry Wood (Wellington) and Frederick and William Wood (Auckland). Mrs. Hammond, Devon Street, New Plymouth, is an aunt of the late Mrs. Wood and Mr. L. Hammond, New Plymouth, is a cousin.
