CANDIDATE FOR PATEA
DR. G. J. ADAMS, WANGANUI OFFICIAL DEMOCRAT NOMINEE. PROMINENT RUGBY ENTHUSIAST. VARIETY OF INTEREST IN SPORTS. Dr. G. J. Adams, Wanganui, has been selected as the official Democrat candidate to contest the Patea seat, held by Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., at the general election. Well known as a medical practitioner and sportsman, he has had local body experience and has lived at Wanganui for the past 17 years. He has interested himself particularly in Rugby and was president of the New Zealand Rugby Union in 1930. This is his first political experience. Interviewed yesterday, he stated the Democrat Party’s policy was one of reconstruction on democratic lines, and he was fully in accord with the principle of maintaining the sanctity of contacts as between the Dominion, England and the rest of the Empire. Born in Lancashire, Dr. Adams came to New Zealand at the age of three and settled first at Waitara and then at Patea, where he attended the school. Later he attended the Wanganui Collegiate School and then went to Scotland, where he qualified as a medical practitioner. On his return to New Zealand he was in practice at Foxton for four years until he enlisted for the Great War. He spent five years overseas and returned to practise at Wanganui. At Foxton he served two terms on the borough council and at Wanganui he has been president of the Rugby Union for 12 years, president of the trotting and savage clubs and of the cricket and indoor bowls associations, and a member ’f the Hospital Board. He is the president of the New Zealand Kindred Associations of Savagery and Orphandom and has interests in many other bodies of a public or semi-public nature. He plays tennis, cricket, golf and bowls and is an enthusiastic swimmer. 1
Details of Dr. Adams’ campaign in the electorate will be decided at Wanganui to-day and a visit will be made by the candidate to Hawera and other centres in the constituency next week.
Mr. Dickie’s candidature was unanimously endorsed by a meeting at Hawera last night. Mr. Dickie is expected back from England on September 13 and will begin his campaign at an early date.
