RAGWORT NUISANCE

SMALL CAMPS SUGGESTED. “FAIRER RETURN FOR SERVICES.” The establishment of comparatively small camps of unemployed men capable of ready transfer was suggested by the Department of Agriculture in a letter received by the Taranaki County Council yesterday as one of the best means of coping with the ragwort nuisance. To make the work more attractive the Unemployment Board r.ad decided considerably to increase the rates of pay, wrote Mr. H. C. Barry, Director of Agriculture. It was expected the employing authority would supplement the rate by obtaining some contribution from the farmer so that the men might receive a fair return for their services and meet the expenses entailed. The department required, before completing the plan, some indication of what co-operation there would be from the county councils in supplying transport and camp gear and in the collection of contributions from farmers. It proposed that the principal inspector, Mr. F. W. Sutton, should fleet the county council at an early d'te to discuss details of the scheme. In the meantime the council was asked to give consideration to the proposal so that the scheme could be inaugurated as early as possible.
