BIG IMPROVEMENTS
NEW PLYMOUTH WATER SUPPLY. REPLACEMENT OF LARGE MAINS. The New Plymouth Borough Council . will at an early date spend nearly £lO,OOO in improvement of the town’s water supply. At a meeting of the council last night the engineer was authorised to carry out the recommendations in a report of August 12 to replace the existing 9in. main along Mangorei Road from the reservoir to the borough boundary with an 18in. main at an estimated cost of £9Oll and to take up, re-condition and relay the cast iron section of the old 10in. main within the borough in Mangorei Road and Waiwaka Terrace at an estimated cost of £827. He was authorised to obtain tenders fo? the work.
So much of the work of taking up reconditioning and relaying the lOin. main as could with advantage be included in the contract for laying the 18in. main will be so included and the balance of the work will be carried out by the engineer, with day labour. The engineer will use his own discretion in deciding how much of the work shall be included in the contract. . The £9838 required for the work will be obtained thus: Approximately £6500 to be provided out of the waterworks portion of the £76,500 loan account thus rinsing that account; the balance out of the waterworks ordinary account The engineer was also instructed to submit an estimate to the next meeting of the works committee of the cost of replacing the 15in. supply main between the intake and the reservoir. '
