ELTHAM SHOP AFIRE

CLOTHIER SUFFERS LOSS. EARLY MORNING OUTBREAK. Fire broke out early yesterday morning in the premises of H. Wells and Co., mercers and outfitters, Bridge Street, Eltham. The fire appears to have started under the front counter and spread up the wall towards the ceiling. A considerable quantity of the stock was charred or .damaged by water. The ceiling, walls and window panes were damaged slightly. The outbreak was discovered by the manager, Mr. C. Gooday, on his return to the premises, and he gave the alarm | to the brigade, which was promptly on the scene. The shop is owned by Mr. N. D. Connell and is insured for £6OO in the Victoria Office.’ The,stock is covered by a policy for £lOOO in the Prudential Office and the fittings for £25 in the same office. The loss is considerable.
