MILITARY WORK

ACTIVITIES AT OKAIAWA. TROPHY FOR COMPETITION. .. v The first, Lewis gun shoot for the re-cently-formed Okaiawa platoon of volunteers in the Central Taranaki district, was held on the platoon's range on Mr, T. King’s property, Okaiawa, during the week-end. Seventy-five per cent, of the full strength attended a whole-day parade. A good deal of time was taken up in instruction in handling and firing the gun, so that only five managed to coniplete the practice. The standard reached by the remainder was very satisfactory. Of the five two obtained marksmen’s badges—Private M. Fletcher 85 and Private C. R. Downey 71. . Rifle shooting was also carried out and eleven qualified. Private R. P. Henry (106) topped the scores and Private J. W. Walker Was second. As in the Lewis gun section, many matches were uncompleted. Since the formation of the platoon about two months ago two men were discharged as they left for other districts and three recruits -were enlisted. Considerable enthusiasm has been shown by members of the platoon, and the fostering of this spirit has been helped by the donation of a special trophy by Private J. W. Walker for competition amongst members of the platoon. It will probably be allotted for Lewis gun shooting. The trophy is a polished and inscribed shell case mounted on a wooden base ornamented with Maori carving, and inset with mother of pearl and small silver shields. The platoon has been successful in securing the football gymnasium as a drill hall—a highly satisfactory arrangement. In .the near future the platoon intends to improve the facilities on the range, Mr. King having given his permission for further excavation to be done. . '■ 1 ■!! .mill. ■■■■»—■
