FLAMES BREAK DOWN WALLS. HURWORTH HOUSE DESTROYED. Flames darting, through the walls of a room in which Mr. and Mrs. J. Hawkings, Hurworth, were having an evening meal at 8 p.m. on Wednesday were the first signs of a fire that razed the house to the ground in a few hours. The only water available was contained in a single tank. Nothing could be done to check the blaze, particularly as the flames had already got a firm hold when they were discovered and were fanned by a strong wind. The Are apparently spread from an open fireplace in the dining room. Neither Mr. and Mrs. Hastings nor their family of two small children were endangered but little was saved except a few household effects. Several neighbours who rushed to the scene were unable to give much assistance. The house, a five-roomed wooden bungalow, belonged to Mr. A. E. Andrews, New Plymouth. It was insured with the Phoenix Office at New Plymouth but the amount is not available. The furniture was not insured.
