TOURNAMENT DANCE
NORTH ISLAND BADMINTON. As a finale to the North Island badminton tournament, a successful dance for the presentation of prizes was held at the Mon Desir on Wednesday night, there being a good attendance. The Spalding Shield for the Taranaki interdub competition was also presented,. Mr. E. L. Brathwaite, secretary, accepting it on behalf of the Hawera club. Commenting on the success of the tournament the president of the Taranaki Association, Mr. C. J. E. Smith, said he had received a telegram of good wishes from Dr. Gower, Waikato. The tournament had been “marvellous,” said Mr. Smith, and he and the executive were especially pleased with the solid support of the country clubs, especially Kaimlro, which had sent 16 members. The popularity of the visitors to the tournament had largely contributed to its success. The executive appreciated the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Fow (Hamilton), Messrs. E. N. Handley, H. Millward and Miss J. Treloar (Wanganui) and Messrs. D. J. S. Moglnie, R. M. Orr and T. P. Foster (Wellington). Mr. Smith thanked the New Plymouth club for its facilities, and Mr. C. Strombom for his organising genius as Mr. Fow, the winner of the singles title, congratulated the officials on their tournament, which was, he said, one of the best he had attended, and assured the audience that he woul. use whatever influence he had to bring the New Zealand championships to New Plymouth next year. Badminton was being developed on the right lines, in Taranaki, and with a fine type of people playing it, the prospects were bright. Mrs. Smith presented the trophies.
