SENSATIONAL SHOOTING SUICIDE AFTER MURDER • WITNESSED BY MOTORIST DEED IN SYDNEY SUBURB By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8.45 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 2. A sensational shooting in broad day* light, witnessed by a motorist, occurred in Victoria Road, Gladesville, a suburb of Sydney, to-day. Mrs. Mary Emmalme Andrews, a wardsmaid employed at the Gladesville mental asylum, was shot dead, allegedly by Peter Kopjevsky, a wharf labourer, who afterwards commited suicide with a revolver. Mr. Francis Hume told the police he was driving a car near the scene when he observed Kopievsky speak to Mrs. Andrews, who was about to go on duty at the neighbouring asylum. He then saw Mrs. Andrews rush across the road. Kopievsky followed her and fired three shots and the woman dropped dead on the tramline. Mr. Hume accelerated the car and tried to run down the woman’s assailant, but the man evaded him and gained the footpath, where he shot himself before Mr, Hume could reach him.
Kopievsky, who was a Russian, was a married man. He was 58 years of age and Mrs. Andrews was 24 years old. A woman acquaintance of Mrs. Andrews told the police that Kopievsky Was infatuated with Mrs. Andrews and had tried to find her the night before.
