NEW FRUIT MARKETS
NECESSITY FOR AN EXTENSION. SOME INQUIRY FROM THE EAST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The necessity for the extension of markets for the fruitgrowing industry was, emphasised at the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board conference to-day when a remit under consideration was to the effect that the Government be urged to assist the board in reopening markets in Germany and France for New Zealand fruit. Mr. J- L. Brown, Nelson, in supporting the remit said a difficulty lay in the fact that there was no reciprocal trade. New Zealand bought little from Germany and less from France. The remit was carried- as was another asking that an endeavour be made to secure a guarantee on experimental fruit and fruit shipped to new markets sufficient to cover the cost of production. Mr. R- Paynter, the chairman, stated that recently the board had . an inquiry from Calcutta for 2000 cases of apples and another inquiry had been received from Hong Kong for apples, the price being very satisfactory, namely 16s a ease. Unfortunately the board had no stocks to supply these markets and it might be that in future the board would have to hold stocks in order to fill orders of this nature. , It was essential if possible to develop new markets and to be able to meet the demand when it arose, particularly m view of the possibility of the contraction of the United Kingdom market.
