ATMOSPHERE TENSE
POLITICAL SITUATION IN FRANCE. • . 7 NATIONAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. Paris, July 13. Although the political atmosphere is tense and many people are leaving Paris in the fear of riots, the national holiday on July 14 is expected to pass without conflict. The leaders of the rival factions have ordered their followers not to create disturbances. Processions are likely to be merely displays of strength. Colonel de la Rocque, leader of the Fiery Cross organisation, has swallowed his fiery words on June 7, when he declared the movement would mobilise in a fortnight and sweep away the Parliamentary system and control by the bankers. He says his speech was misunderstood. He says he is not a Fascist and is not opposed to Parliamentary government. His climb down has exasperated his extremist supporters.
The police are strongly manning the danger points and all forms of transport will be suspended in the afternoon in order to localise incidents.
