MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. QUESTION OF TREE-PLANTING. . The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbbur Board was held on Friday night Present were Messrs. James Hine (chair- w man), H. Spurdie, E. C. Jones, J. Viqkery and E. A. Dugdale. • ‘ , A letter was received from the Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society, 4 Hawera, stating the society was proposing to alter the building it was leasing from the board, by making a shop front on the span nearest to the bridge. The society asked the board to put a new floor in that part of the store that was to be improved. - ■ j It was decided favourably to consider the proposal, which was referred to the works committee for investigation, with power to act Asking the board’s approval, Mr. C. F.; Dowsett forwarded plans of subdivisions of sections 1 to 8, block 15, and sections 1 to 4, block 14, Waitara West, making in all 17 sections. 11 , » Mr. J. Barras was granted a renewal of his lease of the river-bank sections at an annual rental of £l6. The Public Works Department wrote thanking the board for loan of punt free of charge and agreeing to accept responsibility for it on the terms mentioned. The chairman reported that he had seen Mr. Dowsett regarding the repair of the river-bank protection work damaged by the recent flood.—The question was held over until the next meeting. The secretary reported that three leases held by Mr. Rattenbury expiring on July 31 would not be required for a further term by Mr. Rattenbury.—lt was left in the hands of Mr.’Vickery and the secretary to deal with the question of letting them on annual tenancies. The harbourmaster (Captain T. X Wood) reported that the depth of water on the bar during June was 6in at, high water neap and 10ft at high water ?_ spring tide. The auxiliary scow Tama-; hoe made three trips. Rough seas caused a considerable amount of erosion on the east beach, from the native property to- » wards the Airedale reef. The parking . area on the native property near the east beach was practically level with high water at spring tides. The protection work at the upstream end of the south wall was repaired and marram grass was planted on the vacant beach section. Permits were issued for the removal of 88 yards of shingle from the beach. The hopper punt decking and doors were removed from the punt, the sides were planked and all the seams caulked and played, the outside of the punt having been given two coats of tar. The punt was taken over by the Public Works Department on July 3. Mr. Smaill had agreed to lease sections 1 to 4, block 8, east, at £5 6s Bd, the amount of rates payable by the board. The coal shed was leased to Mr. Pennington. . Mr. E. A. Dugdale gave notice of motion that three rows of trees should be planted along the boundary of the board’s North Beach property, between the Maori reserve and the beach and from there to in line with the Airedale reef. Mr. Dugdale suggested that willows should be planted inside the stone protection work, from the present willows to the Clifton Rowing Club’s boatshed. It was pointed out by the chairman that it would be necessary to erect ft fence to keep the stock from eating the willows. The matter was held over. It was decided to adopt a suggestion ’ by Mr. Dugdale that the works committee should meet sooner after the monthly meeting of the board.
