TOC H CLOTHES DRIVE
500 PARCELS COLLECTED GOOD NEW PLYMOUTH RESPONSE. RELIEF COUNCIL ASSISTED. ■ ■ • . • . ; V ■ About the same in quantity as last year, the garments collected in New Plymouth on Saturday as a result of the 'clothes drive organised by the New Plymouth Group, of Toe H, in conjunction with the Mayor’s Relief Council, were in the main of greater utility and should, it is thought, be of greater value to the distributors. Thf. drive commenced at 7.30 a.m. and by the time the last load had arrived at the depot shortly after 10.30 o’clock more than 500 parcels and about the same num- ' ber of books and magazines had been collected. ‘ , Between 25 and 30 motor-cars and nearly 100 collectors, including more than SO New Plymout Boys’ High School pupils, took part i ■ the collecting of the parcels. Every quarter ’ the town was'systematically canvassed, car drivers being given slips of paper containing explicit typewritten directions of areas to be worked.. The collecting was facilitated • by the co-operation of ♦ householders in> wrapping the articles in paper and placing the parcels bn their front door step. The parcels were taken to the soldiers’ club, where the sorting was commenced preparatory to fumigation. On the whole the collection was mast successful, greate quantities of men’s clothing, and serviceable boots and shoes being in evidence than was the case last year, although numerically articles of women’s clothing predominated. After fumigation the clothes will be hung on long racks to facilitate their' disposal by the : relief council, which, constituted as it is of representatives of the charitable organisations of New Plymouth, is in an excellent position to ensure that the clothes arc distributed t the most necessitous cases.. , The books and magazines, in many cases in surprisingly good condition, Collected will be covered and where necessary reconditioned by the Toe H members and placed on toe shelves of the library instituted and maintained by Toe H for the benefit ofs patients in the New Plymouth hospital. A number of residents unable to give old clothing made cash donations. Others whose houses were inadvertently missed by the collectors have since communicated with Toe H members and arrangements have been made to collect their contributions. The Mayor, Mr. E. R.,C. Gilmour, and several of toe organisers expressed complete satisfaction with the result of the appeal. It has been noticed toat eaph year the response to toe appeal'has diminished and Mr. Gilmour pointed out that such .had been toe case tois year. Mr. Gilmour on behalf of the council and himself expressed, appreciation to the members of Toe H, 4 the collectors and all who made their cars available for the ' drive. He thanked the citizens lor their response and generous donations.
