SEVERAL SURPRISE WINS SOUTH ISLAND HORSES IMPROVE. DEBUT TOO . MUCK PACE ON FLAT. (By Telegraph.—Special to News.) Wellington, July 13. The Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting concluded at Trentham to-day in fine weather. The attendance was good and the course heavy. Debut’s Hack Hurdles: The day opened with a'surprise, Debut easily beating the favourite, Hunting Jay, who, however, ran a good race under a big weight. Debut took the lead at the outset and passing the mile post was eight lengths clear of Hunting Jay, who was three lengths in front of Imasurvey, with Kia Tina, Swift and Sure and Ruaform following. The field re.duced Debut’s lead in. the run. along the back and Crossing, the top Debut had a small lead on Hunting Jay, with Swift and Sure close up, and then came Ruaform, who was under pleasure. Hunting Jay jumped to .the front three furlongs from home but Debut went to the lead again on the fiat and eventually ran in a winner by six lengths from Hunting Jay, who beat Ruaform by eight lengths, with Swift and Sure two lengths away fourth and Bright Sky and Kia. Tina well back. Prince Vai fell at the first hurdle and Imasurvey did not complete the course.

Novic® Won by Valarth. Bazaine 'began well in the Novice Handicap and with Colombo led on to the course proper, where Sporting Song was prominent, but wide out. Tail Light, Debham, Valarth and Isaacs were others well in the picture, with Valarth coming through. Debham and Valarth fought out the finish, in which Valarth won by a head, with ■ Colombo a length away third and Sporting Song fourth. Isaacs, Rompalong, Hunting Cat and Tail Light were next. Tudor’s Win Convincing.

Giving a splendid exhibition of fencing Tudor scored an end-to-end win in Che July Steeplechase. Ruby Meteor made a very bad jump at the second fence and passing- the stands the first time Tudor was the leader by several lengths from. Riotous, Manawatu, Valpeen, Pahu and Anemometer. Sir Musk ran off at the second fence of the stand double. Tudor continued to lead all the way along the 'back, and he was four lengths in front of Pahu after crossing the stand double the. second time, Valpeen had moved into third place and Anemometer and Manawatu were close up. Tudor drew out in. the run along the back and gave nothing else a chance. He approached the straight eight lengths clear of Anemometer, who was six lengths clear of Pahu, with Valpeen a few' lengths farther back and Manawatu ■beaten off. Tudor came on to win easily by eight lengths from Anemometer, who was ten lengths clear of Pahu, who beat Valpeen comfortably for third place. Manawatu was the only other to finish, Riotous having been eliminated at the sod wall in the last round. Tudor’s was a fine performance and apparently he is right back to form. Close Finish in Hack Six. Solaria was first on to the course proper in the Crofton Handicap, with Sunny Maid close up and Windward, Grand .Score, Linguist, Leprechaun and Royal Feast prominent. In a great finish the first four horses went across the line on almost even terms,. Mount Vai, coming through solidly, beat Linguist by a head, while Royal Feast and Windward, who were a head away, dead-heated for third place. Thane was fifth, yvith Grand Score and Sunny Maid next. Revision All the Way.

Revision went to the front early in the Winter Hurdles and won all the way. Passing through the straight the first time she was followed by London, Aladdin, Dunmure, Esteem, Lycidas and Master Musk. Aladdin hit the hurdle near the official stand very hard and Idst'hls rider. Lycidas moved forward along the back and took up second place behind Revision, while Esteem improved his position and Master Musk was the most prominent of the others, with Hounslow next, and Rasouli, who had lost a lot of ground through a bad jump early in the race, among the rear division. Crossing the top Revision had a small lead on Lycidas, with Master Musk and Esteem both close up. .These four were fairly close together at the last hurdle and in the run home Revision won by half a length from Esteem, who finished fast and beat Lycidas by three-quarters of a length. Master Musk was a close fourth and Rasouli and Hounslow next. Easy for Lapel. The Winter Oats field was released to a perfect start, from which the first to show out was Glenvane, who was followed by Wino, Tybalt, Curie and Full Throttle. Glenvane led across the top with Wino closing on him and Curie, Tybalt, Pladie, Royal Gallant, Lapel and Full Throttle handy. Wino was the first to turn for home, with the order of the other leaders little changed. Wino and Tybalt failed to run on. and Lord Vai came through and took charge, but Lapel finished very fast on the rails and won by three lengths from Lord Vai, while Curie was third half a length away and Full Throttle was fourth. After the placed horses came Tybalt, Pladie, Wino, Glenvane, Mercian Prince and Knockout. Guarantee at Nice Price. Last in the early running Guarantee came through fast in the straight to win the Onslow Handicap decisively, though ridden out, and paid a nice dividend. Kemal Pasha began well and led on to the course" proper from Prince Acre, with Astarth prominent but wide out. Prince Acre stuck to his task well but Guarantee, under pressure, came with a sustained run on the rails and won by a length and a-half. Kemal Pasha, who ran a good race all the way, was two lengths away in third place and Good Hunting was a moderate fourth. Then came Astarth, Royal Bengal, Cawbeen, Orapai, Merry Peel and Sea Fox. Sisterina by Six Lengths.

Royal Guy, Sisterina and Valueless were slow away in the Kia Ora Handicap, but Sisterina quickly ran through to the front and led all the way. She was followed along the back by Pegged Exchange, Dorado, Royal Banquet and Wahine Nui. Crossing the top Sisterina was clear of Pegged Exchange, Wahine Nui, Dorado and Royal Banquet. Sisterina ran away in the straight and won by half a dozen lengths from Dorado, who beat Kurapae by a length. Royal Banquet was fourth and then came Impossible and Royal Guy. The winner paid a big dividend.
