WRECK OF MAHENO

HER BACK REPORTED BROKEN. NOW NO HOPE OF SALVAGING. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. Brisbane, July 12. No attempt was made to-day to salvage the steamer Maheno, which is ashore on Fraser Island. The tug Carlock reached the scene this morning, but was later discharged by the Japanese master of the Oonah, who has charge of both vessels. A report that the Maheno’s back had been broken is denied, but it is believed the vessel is seriously damaged and that it will not be-, long before her back will be broken as the result of heavy pounding. The Japanese paid £6OOO for the Maheno. The Maheno and the Oonah were both purchased in New Zealand by Japanese interests for breaking up. The Oonah was towing the Maheno to Japan when the towrope broke and, the Maheno, without power of her own,' drifted on to the island.
