FIRST WOMEN’S TOUR
NEW ZEALAND HOCKEY TEAM VALUE TO GAME IN DOMINION. i> By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A civic farewell was given members of the New Zealand women’s hockey team, which left by the Marama for Sydney to-day. Cr.' M. F. Luckie, on behalf of the Mayor, congratulated members of the team on their selection, and extended to them good wishes for their tour of Australia, remarking that this was the first overseas tour to be made by a women’s hockey team. Mrs. Poulton, manageress of the team, expressed the hope that the team would uphold the high traditions of New Zealand teams in other fields of sport. Mrs. Gilkedder, on behalf of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association, said she thought the selectors had chosen the team well and that it would uphold New Zealand’s reputation just as the men had done. As this was the first overseas tour made by a New Zealand women s hockey team it was probable that the players would encounter different types of play from that in New Zealand and hockey would therefore benefit greatly.
