BUSINESS MEN MEET
TARANAKI CHAMBER’S ACTIVITY. QUESTION OF INCORPORATION. A decision to discuss tlie question of incorporation at the next meeting was made by members of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce at the quarterly meeting last night. The president, Mr.- E. V. Tingey, presided over an attendance of more than 20. New members elected were Messrs. A. A. Blennerhassett, G. C. Tait, G. C. Kibby and C. B. Webster. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. J. Bitehener, wrote acknowledging the chamber’s communication in support of representations to link Uruti and Whangamomona by Rerekino, Mangaowata and Marco Roads. The question would receive careful consideration when a comprehensive report was obtained, and in tlie meantime the request was noted for consideration in the forthcoming estimates. The North Taranaki provincial office of the Farmers’ Union notified that Mr. H. E. Blyde had been appointed as representative on the chamber. The Unemployment Board wrote asking the co-operation of the chamber in compiling an estimate of the probable ■building operations to be carried out within, the next two years by public or semi-public bodies operating on a nonprofit earning basis. It was desired to gauge the extent of employment likely to be created by such works. Mr. Tingey suggested with regard to a question concerning New Plymouth’s proposed new library that it was a matter for the borough council.
iMr. L. J. Rundle said assistance was being provided for the rebuilding of dairy factories. “Unfortunately most of our factory buildings in Taranaki are fairly modem, so that we shall not be able to take advantage of the provision,” he added.
Mr. P. J. H. White voiced the opinion of the meeting when he said the chamber had not the information at its disposal. The Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand wrote supplying particulars of a graduated scale of fees adopted by some chambers. The organisation also reported receipt of a letter from the Minister promising consideration of a suggestion that saints’ days should be eliminated from the list of bank holidays. _ 1 Following a discussion Mr. White gave notice to move that the chamber proceed to incorporation and affiliation with the Associated Chambers of Commerce. The subject was discussed further, it being suggested that the executive of the associated chambers was not representative.
Mr. A. H. Bone said that at the same time the work done by the associated chambers was invaluable. The secretary, •Mr. V. Duff, supported Mr. Bone’s views. Mr. J. McNeill brought up the question again of having the new post office, when decided oh, in a more central position. Members thought tire matter should not be stressed more than the requirement of automatic telephones.
