PROSPECTS BRIGHTER

MEAT AGREEMENT HOPES FURTHER CABLES FROM LONDON. INTERESTS MEET AT WELLINGTON. DELEGATION CONSIDERING REPLY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The prospects of a settlement in the meat negotiations at London were stated to-day to be brighter as the result of confidential cablegrams received by the Government from the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. The acting Prime Minister, Sir Alfred Ransom, stated that he could not disclose the information forwarded by Mr. Coates, but the whole matter was considered to-day by the Cabinet, the Executive Commission of Agriculture and the New Zealand Dairy Board. The reply to Mr. Coates’ cable would be forwarded later to-day, Sir Alfred added. Until the New Zealand delegation considered this reply it would not be possible to make public the nature of the possible agreement. ARGENTINE REFUSAL EXPECTED. BRITISH PROPOSAL OF A LEVY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, July 10. The Argentine’s reply to the British proposals of a levy of IJd a pound on Argentine chilled meat with a farthing a pound levy on Dominion meat is expectedly shortly. Refusal is generally expected, which may mean continuation of the Anglo-Dominion arrangements on • quarterly basis. The Dominions Office, nevertheless, points out that tentative arrangements to continue the home beef subsidy do not necessarily imply that there is no hope of an agreement, as even if this is reached without delay it will still be necessary to preserve the subsidy for some time until the revenue from the levy reaches at least an equivalent amount.
