Outsize in Chisels.

The Bluff Harbour Board’s Lobnitz rock-breaker is engaged in breaking rock between No. 1 and No. 2 berths at the main wharf to give a greater margin of safety to visiting vessels. The rockbreaker is really an outsize in chisels for it is a huge iron drill, 45 feet in length and weighing 18 tons. This is mounted on a punt and raised and dropped like a pile-driver. The drill has a hard core and a softer metal outside, so that it sharpens itself as it works.

Anti-Poaching Campaign. In spite of the efforts of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society’s rangers poaching continues in all parts of the district, according to the society’s annual report. “The well-organised system under which the ranging is done is not sufficient to cope with the evil,” the report proceeds. “An attempt is to be made for a more comprehensive arrangement with honorary rangers with a view to a more efficient organisation to apprehend culprits.”
