BREEDERS GATHER
STRATFORD JERSEY CLUB WORK. / BRANCH MEMBERS’ PROMINENCE. Good fellowship and a varied and appropriate programme made the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club’s annual social a success on Thursday night. The Foresters’ hall'was crowded for the occasion, and a notable feature of the evening was the large proportion of visitors from outside Stratford and even outside Taranaki. Concert items were interspersed with the toasts and speeches. Mr. C. H. Clemow, president of the club, presided. The great value of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association, the life and soul of Taranaki, was Stressed by Mr. W. Harris in. proposing the toast of the association. The work the association had done in spite of the depression had been “truly wonderful.” He referred particularly to the part taken in the affairs of the association by Mr. Guy Bell. In his reply on behalf of the council, Mr. Bell mentioned the splendid work done in the early days of the association by the men who carried it through the first stages to its present position of practically the strongest body in the southern hemisphere. He congratulated the branches on the way they were fulfilling .their purpose. He hoped that the association would be able to help the clubs as much in the future as it had been able to do in the past. The Jersey breeders were the strongest supporters of the C.O.R. system, and the association was helping the members considerably in this respect. The total assistance for the five, years was close on £13,000, and it was only because of the sound foundation laid by the pioneers that it was able to do this.' Five years ago the, association showed a/ profit on the year’s work of £1800; last year the amount had been reduced to £134 as a result of the generosity with which the council helped breeders. ■ CLASSIFICATION OF STOCK. Classification of stock was .another move carried out over the last few years that would be of great benefit. The toast of “Kindred Societies” was proposed by Mr. K. Kirk. Mr. Kirk paid tribute to the work being done in the interests of the country by the societies. It was the interest spread through the societies that directly benefited the breeds. Mr. Amess in reply congratulated the Jersey Club on being a thoroughly live body and on the success its efforts had attained. . The Inglewood Jersey Breeders’ Club was represented by Mr. J. Klenner, who assured the gathering of the good relations existing between his club and the other bodies of Taranaki. His pleasure at seeing so many visitors present was expressed by Mr. H. J. Kaye, who proposed their health. Congratulations to the Taranaki breeders on the class of cattle shown during Jersey week were expressed by Mr. J. H. Wilson, Hastings. Mr. D. Speak, Hamilton, thanked the club on behalf of the visitors for the hospitality. The progress made by the Stratford Jersey Breeders’ Club was referred to by Mr. T. R. Anderson, who proposed the toast of the club. The Stratford club was once very small, • but had grown exceptionally well. Although not a member of the club, he had watched its progress with interest, and he appreciated fully the improvements made in the Jersey breed through the efforts of the club. Mr. C. Clemow, president of the club, referred to the great amount of work lone in the interests of the club by Mr.- i El. J. Kaye, formerly its president. Last (rear the bull sale .was again good and i iopped the sales for Taranaki. In conlection with the reason lying behind i his success, Mr. Clemow mentioned the irst gold medal won.under the' C.O.R. < iystem- by O’Sullivan Bros’. Sultan’s < Dairy. C.O.R. work commenced in 1913.914, he said, but it was not until 1917
that any breeder in the Stratford district came to the fore. Since the win- . ning of that first medal in 1917 the O’Sul- ■ livans had provided many medal win- • ners. - \ ' AWARD OF MEDALS. Quoting figures in connection with C. work in Taranaki, Mr/ Clemow ; mentioned that of the 75 medals awarded • in the last four years 14 came to mem- < bers of the Stratford club, and six of i the 25 gold medals awarded also came to the club. Stratford club members would not represent more than 3 per -j cent, of the New Zealand membership. The Jersey section at the show, he considered, was not up to standard and at ] a meeting of the club recently it was i decided that the breed would be very ' much better displayed at an autumn in- J stead of a spring show. At the annual meeting of the A. and P. Association the < meeting recommended that the show be , altered from a spring to an autumn fix- ‘ ture. ■ , Mr. Clemow referred particularly to the assistance given the club during the ( year by the women, who supported the K club whole-heartedly. He also expressed thanks, to the auctioneers, Mr. W. Harris, stock inspector, and the dairy division. He thanked the club’s secretary, Mr. W. F. Ross, the artists performing during the evening, the accompanist, Miss E. Moon, and the Press.
