SITTING OF NO. 5 AUTHORITY. TWO NEW LICENSES ISSUED. Twelve applications under the Transport Licensing Act were heard by the No. 5 District Licensing Authority at Stratford yesterday. The six applications for renewal of passenger service licensee were all granted, as were an application for a goods license endorsed for the carriage of passengers, an application for a license for an ambulaiice, a goods service license and a transfer of a goods service license. The authority comprises Messrs. P. Thomson (chairman), R. A. Wilson and J. Rolleston. Mr. W. B. Grant represented the Railway Department. C. Coltart was granted a renewal of his continuous passenger service license between Opunake and Stratford. J. B. Smith’s application for an amendment to his passenger license for the OpunakeEltham run to allow him to delete the services leaving Opunake at 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day and returning that evening, and leaving Eltham at 1.50 p.m. on Christmas Day, was granted. _ Permission to advance his time of departure from Kaponga each morning from 8.30 to 8.10 o’clock in order to reach Hawera before 9 for the benefit of school children was sought by L. A. B. Plant, Kaponga. He asked that the departure time he left at 8.30 on Saturdays and during term holidays, however, in order to connect with Coltart’s bus from Opunake. Plant also asked to be allowed to abandon his Normanby-Hawera daily service except on Saturdays and special occasions such as race and shoWSaysz'''There, was not 'sufficient custom to warrant a daily • service, he said. -'■■' ' ■

Evidence was given by J. Dash, principal of the Hawera Technical High School, as to the advisability of advancing the time of arrival at Hawera. There were about 11 pupils coming in from Kaponga.? The application was granted in full, a stipulation being, made that the timetable alterations must be advertised.

Egmont Tourist' Motors Ltd., Hawera, for whom E. - K. Cameron, secretary, appeared, asked for amendments giving it the right to vary its passenger timetable on the Hawer'a-Opunake route to suit patrons on Hawera race days, and the right to run vehicles along the main south road and to Ohawe beach on public holidays and other special occasions. The applications were granted. The company’s passenger service licenses in the four rural mail areas surrounding Hawera were renewed. An amendment to his goods service license between, Tahora and Stratford to permit him to carry passengers was applied for by S. H. R. Anderson, Whangamomona. He had taken out a passenger service license last year, he said, but was anxious to avoid having to pay two fees. He averaged about .three passengers a day, the average journey being 40. miles. To Mr. Grant, Anderson said his service left Stratford at 3.15 p.m. daily and reached Whangamomona at 5.30. Mr. Grant pointed out that a railway, service ran practically parallel ’with the lorry at almost exactly the same time, and that Anderson was taking passengers away from the railway. He therefore opposed the carrying of passengers and the granting of a license. The application for renewal of the goods service licenses amended to allow the carriage of six passengers, was granted subject to review when the goods service license is renewed in August. A minor amendment in his passenger | service license from Opunake to Hawera, that on Hawera race days he b e allowed to delay his departure from Opunake from 8 o’clock to 9.30, was applied for by G. H. Hooper. The application was granted. The application of the Stratford Hospital Board for a pass-mger service, license for an ambulance, to operate within the Stratford and Ohura counties with the right to run to the New Plymouth hospital and Eltham was granted. Application for a 1 '.cense to carry two passengers and goods on the Tariki-Rata-piko route was made by J. Marr, Tariki. He had a mail contract, he said, but wanted permission to carry small boxes and parcels from the Tariki railway station out to Ratapiko. The license was granted. In the absence of the Hawera Hospital Board’s representative, its application for a passenger license for an ambulance was adjourned to the Wanganui sitting next week.
