RESCUE BY WAITARA PUPIL. RECOGNITION BY, COMMITTEE. At the breaking-up ceremony of the Waitara primary school yesterday morning after the presentation of swimming certificates and the Herbert . Smith Trust Gups and miniatures to the winners of the athletic and swimming championships. Mr. W. B. Glasgow presented to Mema White an inscribed silver .. and gold medal from the committee in recogntion of his plucky act in promptly jumping into the river on January 29 and rescuing Don Taylor, who had fallen off the dredge while fishing, and who would probably have lost his life except for Merna’s action. . -
The. action was courageous, Mr. Glasgow said, and they were all very proud of Mema, whose act had been reported to the Royal Humane Society. So far reply had been received whether the society, would make an. award, but the medal was a memento from the school committee. In making the' presentation Mr. Glasgow referred to the accident as showing the necessity for all learning to swim.
