WOMEN’S DIVISION

MEETINGS OF BRANCHES Okaiawa: The monthly meeting was held in the hall on Tuesday. Miss Edna Washer presided over a fair attendance. The speaker for the afternoon, Colonel Closey, gave an address on economic problems/ Questions were asked by ■members. A general discussion on the girls’ educational week t„ok place but nothing was decided. • 'lt was decided to make a donation to the jubilee cancer fund. Uruti: -In spite of inclement weather the meeting oh Wednesday at the residence of Mrs. Lawrence was well attended. Mrs. W. Oxenham presided. Several boxes of books were packed r6ady for nearby branches. It was reported that a letter of sympathy had been sent to Mrs. Jones, who was indisposed. The president reported that she with a number of others, including Mesdames Haylock, Radcliffe, Lawrence and Jones, attended the Inglewood branch’s birthday party. It was decided to have a roll call each month, the first to be entitled “My Best Labour Saver.” A competition for an article made from the yard of cretonne was won by Mrs. McCabe, with Mrs. W. Oxenham second. The hostesses were Mesdames Fugle, and Hay lock. ".Hurworth: The' first meeting for the new year was held on May 2. Mesdames Browne and Corfield were hostesses and the president, Mrs. Baker, was in the chair. The branch was asked to accept two gifts, one a large box with lock and key in which to keep the library books, from Mrs. H. Allan, and the other a pair of hand-knitted woollen slippers and a baby’s bonnet and booties to be used to raise funds, from Mrs. Corfield. Mrs. Heal was appointed to the committee in place of Mrs. Gilbert Who resigned. The secretary was asked to convey thanks to the Hurworth branch of the Farmer’s Union for a donation of £1 Is. It was decided to hold June’s meeting on May 30 to avoid clashing with the Agricultural Society’s Winter Show. An invitation was received and accepted from the Hillsborough branch to attend their first birthday party. While all were seated round, Sister Jackson, district nurse 'told about her work. She answered Tn any questions on children’s ailments and advised the treatments. Next meeting Sister Jackson will , demonstrate “first aid” and the methods: of bandaging . *

Toko: Mrs. A. Lees presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting on Wednesday afternoon. One new member, Mrs. Geo. Smith, was welcomed. A, motion of sympathy with Mrs. Stove in -her recent bereavement was carried. Invitations to attend birthday parties Were received from the Huiroa-Kiore and Ratapiko-Manganui branches. It was decided to accept both invitations, a

car-load of members to attend each party. Mfs. Lees mentioned that the afternoon tea provided for soldiers on Anzac Day was a success. She thanked members for their support. All the members had not been able to take part, on this occasion as time for organisation was short, but all members would be able to help next time. It was decided to hold the birthday party of the branch on June 13 and the next monthly meeting on the first Thursday in June. An invitation to attend the next meeting of the Huinga' branch was accepted. Miss K. Jones and Miss Dorothy Zeedham were selected to attend the girls’ educational week at New Plymouth in June. A social to defray the expenses of the giiLs’ educational week will be held on the evening of the birthday party. The hostesses and visiting committee reported having had an easy month, no sick members having been reported. The (committee for next month will be Mesdames Kilsby, Anderson, R. G. Grierson,!. Grierson and Raynor. Results of the coconut ice competition were: Mns. R. G. Grierson 1, Mrs. Sextus 2, Miss C. Milne 3. The judge, Mrs. P. Griffiths, was accorded a vote of thanks. A competition held during the afternoon was won by Miss N. Butler. Cardiff: The monthly meeting was held in the hall on Wednesday, Mrs. D. Brunton presiding over a fair attendance. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Greenwell, whose husband was ill. x Arrangements regarding the returned soldiers’ luncheon were, completed. The annual meeting of the branch was held on the following day, when there was a good attendance. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs. D. Brunton; vice-presidents, Mesdames P. F. Marchant, C. Carley, R. Perry; secretary, Mrs.” W. Myers; treasurer, Mrs. P. Horn;; delegates to the provincial executive, Mesdames Horn and Myers. A vote of thanks to the retiring secretary, Mrs. R. Smith, was carried, regret being expressed at the fact that she was not seeking re-election. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. C. Hawkes for his services as auditor. Omata: The first meeting of the year was held on Tuesday; there being a good attendance. The president, Mrs. R. Penwarden, welcomed visitors. The bal-ance-sheet’ for the last dance showed a profit of £5 Is 10d, the sum of £4 being forwarded to the agricultural society as a donation towards’ the restoration of the showgrounds. The president gave a demonstration. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. E. Bailey in the death of her sister. The hostesses were Mesdames Wilton and Moreland.

Matapu: The monthly meeting was held on Tuesday, when Mrs. Robertson, in the absence of the president, Mrs. Sharp, presided over a good attendance, A discussion took place regarding the formation of a Red Cross class, but Owing to insufficient members it was decided not to continue. Winners of the monthly competitions were: Machinemade article, Miss M. Guy 1, Mrs. Calder 2,' Miss Gatenby 3; eggless cake, Mrs. Robertson 1, Mrs. J. Preece 2, Mrs. H. Calder 3. Hostesses were Mrs. J. Preece and Miss M. Guy.
