KAHUI TUG-OF-WAR

FINAL PULLS TO-NIGHT. FIVE TEAMS REMAIN IN. Five teams remain in the finals of the Kahui tug-of-war tournament which are to be decided in the Rahotu Hall tonight. The Haupoto teams have both their lives intact in' both the heavyweight and the lightweight divisions, having so far been undefeated. In the heavyweight Haupoto is opposed by Kahui and in the lightweight by. Warea and Westward Ho, each of which has one life. The public therefore is assured of at least three pulls if Haupoto manages still to go through undefeated, and four or five if it does not. '' Immediately following the finals a dance will be held. Originally there were 12 lightweight and four heavyweight teams, the tournament being run on the two-life system. Good progress was made, the organisation being excellent. Eleven pulls were decided on the first night and 13 on the second night. There were large attendances, and with the crowd expected at the finals to-night the proposal to build a hall at Kahui Road should be much further advanced. The competing teams were:— Lightweight. United: Messrs. Dravitski, J. and A. Harrop and S. and J. Dobbin. Haupoto: E. and J. and A. Looney, C. Eustace and L. Castles. Bunkum Boys: \ D. Lewis, , Babington, B. Bailey and C. and A. Pepperill. Warea Road: A. Newport. S. Watt, C. and G. Julian and J. Smith. Diamonds: C. and —. Haskell, Hickland, Stevens and Brooking. Opua: W. and J. FeaVer, Loveridge, Dudley and Crawford. Speights: R. Topless, G. Garvin, L. Cole, J. McKenzie and P. Stevens. Froth Blowers: D. Wilson, W. Schilt, J. Simpson and Teoko (2). Mites: Bensly, Brennan, Taiwhiti, Deacon and Carr. Westward Ho: Johnston, Zurcher, Mitchell, Tamati and Field. Old Boys: Lewis, J. Rangi, D. Rangi, Waiwiri and Collins. Kahui: S. Pepperell, L. Todd, Hodson, and C. and W. Angelsea. Heavyweights. Waitaha: August, Kahui, Ngaia and Waiwiri (2). Haupoto: L. Castles, H. Yeates, W. Goodin, A. Looney and S. Hopkins. Speights: R. Topless, Garvin, Cole, McKenzie and Stevens. Kahui: D. Ford, Sitlington, Ewart, S. and C. Pepperell. Details are:— Lightweight. Second Round One-lifers. Wartea defeated Old Boys by six inches after having the advantage all the time. United defeated Kahui by five inches. Kahui held its own for half the time and it looked like being a great struggle. United, however, then gradually gained the upper hand. Mites defeated Opua by two inches and a-half. This was a very even pull. Westward Ho defeated Bunkum Boys by seven inches. It was an easy win, Westward Ho having the advantage throughout. Frothblowers a bye.' , " Old Boys, Kahui, Opua and Bunkum Boys were eliminated. Two-lifera. Haupoto defeated Diamonds by three inches after an interesting pull. Third Round. ' (One-Lifers. Warea '-defeated Frothblowers by six inches and a-half in a somewhat easy .pull. United defeated Mites by seven inches. Mites gained the light at the outset but United then took the upper hand to win well. ■Westward Ho defeated Diamonds by one inch in one of the best pulls of the tournament. Westward Ho gained the light from the start and it flickered as first one and then the other held a slight advantage. It was, in fact, anybody’s pull bn the last half minute, but with a final effort Westward Ho gained the advantage by an inch. Frothblowers, Mites and Diamonds were eliminated. Fom-th Round. . t (One-lifers.) Warea defeated United by three inches, after- having the light all the time. Westward Ho defeated Speights by five inches. Westward Ho secured an inch at the outset and gradually increased the lead to six inches. In the last minute, however, Speights regained an inch. United and Speights eliminated. (Two-lifers.)

Haupoto defeated Speights by about six inches very comfortably. Heavyweight.

Haupoto defeated Kahui by two. inches. This was another splendid pull. Kahui had a bare advantage nearly all the time, but Haupoto put up a great fight to stave off defeat.

Kahui defeated Waitaha by three inches after a splendid struggle. Schoolboy Pull.

In a challenge gpull Kahui schoolboys defeated Rahotu schoolboys by an inch after a splendid pull.
