STRANGE LIGHT SEEN
FIRST OCCUPANTS OF NEW HUT. FIVE THOUSAND FEET ALTITUDE. Five thousand feet above sea level a strange light on the slopes of Mt. Egmont last night attracted the attention of settlers at Egmont Village and surrounding districts. It was the illumination of candles used by the first residents at the new hut erected on the higher slopes by members of the Taranaki Alpine Club. The first sod in connection with the building of the hut was turned on Christmas Day, and it is expected the finishing touches will be completed by the end of Easter. About a dozen members of the Taranaki Alpine Club continued the conveying of material to the hut site yesterday. The stove was installed and the chimney erected. Later a fire was lit and the stove gave very satisfactory results. A party consisting of Messrs. S. F. Hartnell, J. Dickie, S. Anchor, N. Wright, I. Aylward and D. McDonald spent last night at the hut.
