HIS STOUT BREEDING
CANDIDATES FOR EASTER MANY FINE TRIALS RECORDED. * i GOOD EFFORT BY REREPAI. (By “Hurry On.”) Star Artist was responsible for a great gallop at Te Rapa on Tuesday morning, when she beat Coronis over seven furlongs in the fast time of Im 295. This will bring her into favour for the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. Galilee’s Half-mile. The Great Northern Champagne Stakes candidate Galilee was responsible for an impressive trial at Te Awamutu on Tuesday, when she reeled off half a mile in 49s and carried out her task in great style. Nevertheless she will require to be at her, best to deal with Gay Sheik and Haut Monde on Saturday. Great Autumn Favourite. The Great Autumn favourite Rerepai, pleased his admirers by the manner in which he covered six furlongs at Awapuni on Tuesday. He ran the distance in lm 15 3-ss, the last five furlongs taking Im 3 2-ss. He will be taken south to-night. G. Humphries has been engaged to ride him. To, Race at Feilding. The two-year-old Fulojoy has accepted for both the Wairarapa and Feilding races on Saturday. A report from Trentham states that she will be racing at Feilding. This filly has been working well, and her brilliance out of the tapes will be a big asset on the turning course. Riders for Ellerslie. The following riding engagements have been announced for Saturday at Ellerslie:— L.' Dulieu: Fleetwind. R. W. McTavish: Korokio, Gay Broney, Galilee. J. F. Fergus: Imperial Prince, Record Flight (second day). S. Tremain: Kelly, Mungatoon, Brilliant Acre, Lady Diana. H. Goldfinch: Du Barry, Gay Marigold, Impasto, Nun Nicer, Flood Tide. J. Winder: Gay Seton, Ford Acre, King’s Archer. A. Gilmer: Ruby Meteor, Adalene. F. Foster: Mangu King, London. I. C. Smith: Royal Artist, Light Comedy, Imamint. T. Webster: Haut Monde, Red Manfred. R. Marsh: Il Duce, Plato. H. N. Wiggins: Mother Superior, Sir Abb. H. Goldfinch: Impasto, Gay Marigold, Flood Tide. , L. Clifford: Caliente. His great effort in running Gay Blonde to a head in the Railway Handicap on Boxing Day demonstrated that Gay Seton is one of the speediest horses in commission at present. However, there ’ are some who doubt his ability to see out the mile in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday. Judged by his breeding fen his dam’s side, he should certainly stay. Persis was by Marble Arch from Latona, by Phoebus Appollo from Antelope, who was out of Miss Kate, the fifth removed dam of the mighty Phar Lap. Phoebus Appollo was the sire of the Melbourne Cup winner Apologise. If Gay Seton lives up to his breeding the mile journey should hold no terrors for him. Galloping Well. , Good Conduct, half-sister by Grand Knight to that good mare Civility, has been showing a good deal of pace on the Wanganui tracks recently. She ran half a mile on Saturday morning in 495, and she will only require to act up to that trial to be. in the picture in the Nursery at Feilding on Saturday. May Effect a Surprise. ' Though not a great deal has been heard of Scotland since his win on the second day of the Tauranga races, this son of Acre has trained on well. The class in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie is generally thought to be rather strong for him, but if a surprise is in store he may be the one to upset the favourites. He is a better horse than he is generally thought to be. In Two Events. Mother Superior figures in both the Easter Handicap and the Great Northern Oaks at Ellerslie on Saturday, but it has not been definitely decided which race will be her mission. Before leaving Fordell for Ellerslie she ran a solid mile, and the Taranaki Stakes Winner is in splendid condition. The easier tracks that have prevailed lately have been all in her favour. Quick Travel Necessary. Two candidates for the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton on Tuesday next, Cuddle and Chief Marionette, have been accepted for in the Manchester Handi- ' cap at Feilding on Saturday. If they are to fulfil their southern engagement as well they will require to be transported very shortly after the Feilding races in order to be shipped at Wellington that night. It is possible, but will require good organisation. Only One Win. The £ig Corry team from Blenheim ; went to Westport, and with the leading jockey, W. J. Broughton, to ride, were expected to have a successful time. However, luck was not with them, Korero’s win in the Westport Cup being the only success that came to either the team or to Broughton.
