ELTHAM.

Mrs. Harold Clarke has returned from New Plymouth, where she was the guest of Mrs. W. Clarke. Mrs. S. W. Crawford has returned from a short visit to Hastings. Miss G. Harcourt has returned from a holiday in the Hawke’s Bay district. Miss N. Campbell, who has been the guest of Mrs. A. CampbelJf has returned to New Plymouth. * Mrs. J. M. Hutchinson was hostess at a gift evening on Friday for Miss P. Taplin. Those present were: Mrs. C. N. Taplin, Mrs. D. Robertson (Hawera), Mrs. M. Kebble, Mrs. R. Bourke, Mrs. D. Kmtckey, Misses P. Taplin, P. Fountaine, L. Ritter, D, Bourke, R. Townsend, D. Newlands, M. Burrows. On Wednesday evening, in the Legion Rooms, Eltham, a gift evening was tendered Miss Mary Furborough, who is shortly to be married. Organised by Mrs. B. O. Harris and Mrs. Les Pennington, the evening was a great success and there was an attendance of 150 guests including many visitors from Hawera. The evening ■ was. spent in games and dancing. Monte Carlos were won by Mr. S. Cross and Miss J. Prime (Hawera) and Mr. and Mrs. Prime. A mystery train dance was won by Mr. Marchant and Miss C. Marchant. Miss E. Rankin sang, Miss M. Lawrence contributed tap ■ dance numbers, and Miss V. Davis gave some elocutionary items. Mr. E. Butler was the master of ceremonies and music for dancing was played by Mr. B. Barleyman, piano, arid Mr. H. Prime, banjo, (both of Hawera). Extras were given by Mrs. Paton and Miss N. Prince (piano) and Mr. McDonald (accordion). Op behalf of Miss Furborough, Mr. F. Gawith thanked all those present. Mrs. B. O. Harris and Mrs. Les Pennington were given three cheers for the manner in which they had organised the gathering. Mr. E. Bunn, on. behalf of his brother, Mr. H. Bunn (Taumarunui), thanked the guests and the organisers.
