WAITARA POPPY DAY

, SUCCESS OF THE APPEAL. STATIONMASTER TRANSFERRED. Poppy Day at Waitara was most successful, the sales of poppies exceeding those of pa. years by a small amount. The sales on Friday amounted to £29 2s. The success of the appeal was largely due to the efforts cf the organiser, Mrs. F. R. S. Bullen, and her helpers, Mesdames G. P. Fuller, J. Priar, C. Nicholls, and Misses M. Allen and M. -Tocher. Mr. R. H. Pickering, stationmaster at Waitara, has received advice of his transfer to the position of waggon superintending officer in the district traffic manager’s office at Wanganui. Mr. Pickering has been a member of the school committee for about three years; he is also a member of the Waitara Bowling Club. Mrs. Pickering has also made a large number of friends. She was a member of the choir of St. John’s Anglican Church and was interested in general church work.

There was a large attendance at the funeral of the late Mrs. H. J. M. Wells at th 6 Waitara cemetery on Sunday. At the graveside the service was conducted by Archdeacon G. H. Gavin and the Rev. F. Clarke. There were many floral' tributes. The pall-bearers were Messrs. W. B. Glasgow, E. A. George, J. W. Hamlin and P. J. Alien.
