COUNCIL BUSINESS
NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH. REQUESTS FROM RATEPAYERS. Mr. T. Innes, secretary of the Vogeltown Progressive Association, wrote to the New Plymouth Borough Council on Monday night pointing out the bad state of the untarred portion of Mill Road. An assurance had been given that the road would be completed before the winter, he said. The matter was referred to the works committee for report. \
In reply to a letter requesting that more adequate license fees should be charged to hawkers of patent medicines and household drugs, the Chemists Defence Association of New Zealand will be informed by the council that the license fee for a hawker and pedlar in New Plymouth is £1 a year, and that by the provisions of The Municipal Corporations Act, 1933, the council is prohibited from charging a higher fee for such a license. Mr. L. L. Gilbert will be informed that provided he pays half the cost of the work the council will asphalt the small strip of the widened footpath in front of his shop in St. Aubyn Street. The matter being one of extreme urgency, the engineer was authorised to comply with the request of the Hawera- Borough Council that he should visit Hawera and advise in regard to the trouble which had arisen there in one of the pumps connected with the sewerage system.
The difference between relief pay and the standard rates will be paid to those relief workers who were employed during the period commencing on March 20 -in filling in the subsidences and washouts on the stock route at Waimea Road.
The Mangorei Dairy Factory Company will be informed that after careful consideration of the Company’s representations the council cannot accede to a request for the supply of electricity to its factory at Mangorei at the price of Id a unit. The suggested new charge Is 2£d a unit less a discount of Id a unit, with a minimum charge. If, however, the Company’s directors are dissatisfied with this offer they will be given the opportunity of making personal representations 'to the council. The Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band, having carried out all its engagements, will be paid its subsidy for the year ended March 31, 1935, 'and will be informed its statement that' it was paid no subsidy for the year ended March 31, 1934, does not appear ,to be correct. The subsidy was omitted in the year ending March 31, 1932. _ \
