CLEARING HIS NAME

ACTION BY CIVIL ENGINEER. SETTLEMENT OUT OF COURT. By Telegraphy-Press Association. Wellington, April 9. Statements by counsel were made in the Supreme Court to-day with reference to the case Douglas Gordon Jack, civil engineer, versus William Cable and Co., who sought to recover damages for wrongful dismissal. Jack alleged that on November 22, 1933, he was engaged under contract to supervise work in connection with the erection of the Wellington railway station at £8 a week and that he was wrongfully dismissed on November 3 last. He claimed a year’s salary and expenses incurred in the removal of his home from Auckland to Wellington. Counsel on behalf of Jack said that a settlement honourable to both parties had been arrived at. One of the difficulties had been that Jack’s name had been incidentally mentioned during the hearing of another case in which Jack was •not represented, and he was anxious to avail himself of litigation in order to vindicate hmiself. He had been identified with the erection of the Auckland station, ana not only had he been highly commended by the principals, but had been paid a bonus. Not only had a satisfactory settlement been arranged, but Jack had secured a further professional engagement and accordingly was satisfied. His qualifications and reputation were such that he could not allow the statements referred to to pass without further notice.
