COUNT ITO’S BREEDING
POLYMELUS AND CARBINE SUGGESTS SPEED AND STAMINA. Count Ito, on whom Keith Voitre has had three winning rides since his departure from New Zealand for Victoria, boasts a stout pedigree, suggesting both speed and stamina. He t is a four-year-old, by Spearhead out of the good performer Sonora, who was the best mare of her day up to nine or ten furlongs. She belongs to the same family as Royal Charter, who won the Moonee Valley Cup, the Herbert Power Stakes (beating Silvius), and was third to Manfred and The Banker in the Caulfield Cup. Sonora was bred by the late Norman Falkiner in Victoria in 1918. She is a cl ~tnut, by imported Land of Song (winner of the Irish Derby) out of imported Polylogy, by Polymelus out of Bill and Coo, by William the Third, son of St. Simon)-.
Polylogy (dam of Royal Charter) was bred in 1914. Her dam was out of Coo-ee, by Trenton out of Lady Sterling, by Silver out of Zorila, by Nuneham. Polylogy was imported as a yearling in 1915. Silver (sire of her third dam) was the sire of Harmonist, sire of the dam of the great sprinter and successful sire, Greenstead. Silver was by Sterling (sire of Isonomy) out of Lucetta, by Tibthorpe (16).
Lang of Song was by Llangibby (son of Wildfowler and Concussion) out of Aliena, by Macintosh out of Lady Wrangler, by Wisdom out of Superba, b„ Sterling. Macintosh was by Florizel 11. (brother to Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee) out of Culleroats, by Darby, a grandson of Blair Athol. Spearhead was imported to New South Wales in 1917 by Mr. ■E. G. de Mestre. He was then a four-year-old. Spearhead did not do much racing, but won up to a mile and a half. He was bred in 1913, and retired to the stud in. 1918. His dam wr- the best two-year-old in England. He is by Spearmint (son of Carbine and Maid of the Mint, by Minting) out of
Baroness la Fleche. by Ladas (1) out of La Fleche, by St. Simon out of Quiver, by Toxophilite out of a mare by Young Melbourne out of Brown Bess, dam of the dam of Musket, whose sire was Toxophilite. Quiver was the dam of Maid Marian, dam of Polymelus and Grafton.
