CATHOLIC CONCERT

AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. ANNUAL ST. PATRICK’S EVENT. St. Mary’s hall, New Plymouth, was packed to capacity last night on the occasion of the annual St. Patrick’s concert presented by the pupils of the combined New Plymouth Catholic schools. The attendance was something of a record, nearly 400 being present. The Rev. Father P. J. Minogue expressed his pleasure at the patronage accorded this well deserving concert, the proceeds from which go to the St. Joseph’s parish fund. The concert itself was a great success, every performer doing his or her bit admirably. Credit for this outstanding event must go to the Sisters of the Mission, who have spent many hours training the performers to the high standard of stage efficiency that they achieved. Everything, in fact, went to show how painstaking they were, when the whole programme was presented smoothly. Every item was applauded enthusiastically, but special mention must be made of “MacNamara’s Band,” portrayed by the .boys of St. Joseph’s School. Master, Maurice Curd, who acted the part of conductor of the band, took the solo work, and his clear, boyish voice was a treat to listen to when, he sang the verses. “The Emergency Band,” by the St. Joseph’s pupils, was a great effort, and Master Ray Jenkins as the orchestra leader played his part with the ease and assurance of a bom actor. • The complete programme was: Violin quintette, “The Wearing of the Green” (Misses B. Bulman, J. Temper©, M. Fleming, C. Sisaridh, I. Cuthbert and Master Fleming); chorus, “The Cooks” (St. Joseph’s); chorus, “Ireland, I Love You” (Sacred Heart High School); folk dance (junior pupils of St. Joseph’s); violin solo, “Liebesfreud” (Miss Betty Bulman), chorus, “Where the River Shannon Flows” (Sacred Heart High School), musical drill (Sacred Heart High School); chorus, “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” (Sacred Heart High School); violin solo, “Souvenir” (Miss Betty Bulman); chorus, “MacNamara’s Band” (St. Joseph’s boys, with Master Maurice Curd as soloist); elocution, “Carrymeela” and “The Boxing Match” (Miss K. McPhillips); dance duo (Miss D. Quinn and Master I Grace St. Joseph’s); chorus, “Will Thy Soul” (St. Joseph’s girls); elocution, “The Road” and “A Teashop Tragedy” (Miss Vera McCarthy); dance, Irish jig (St. Joseph’s); dialogue, “The Emergency Band’ (St. Joseph’s, with Master Ray Jenkins as principal).
