HOCKEY IN TARANAKI
ASSOCIATION’S MEETING INDIA MATCH AT NEW PLYMOUTH. APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Hockey Association was held at Eitham last .night, about 40 delegates attending. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the chairman, Mr. H. C. Johnson, referred to the fact that it was possible to carry on the competitions by the joining of memberships of weak clubs such as Manaia and Otakeho and Kaponga and Mangatoki. This showed a fine spirit of comradeship existing among the clubs. He complimented the secretaries on their good work and commended the standard of hockey. The loss of £3 on the year’s work did not worry him very much, but there was nothing from. gate receipts. This practically accounted for the difference. ' Mr. J. Ebbett considered that receipts of £4 from the June 3 tourney were rather small.
The chairman said this was only half the profit as the other half went to the women’s association.
The secretary said fees collected since had brought the profit to £5 12s lid.
Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. H. C. Johnson; vicepresidents, Messrs. Ebbett, Jackson, Grace, C. J. Pennington, C. Davies; management committee, Messrs. A. Ryan, J. Ebbett, L. Page, R. Irwin, V. Betts, and M. Priest; joint secretaries and treasurers, Messrs. E. Urry and A. J. Bennett; delegate to New Zealand Association, the Rev. J. A. Watson; auditor, Mr. H. N. Murray; senior selectors, Saturday division, Mr. H. Nodder; Thursday, Mr. Ebbett; Wednesday, Mr. Jackson; junior selectors, Messrs. Priest, Byron and McFadyen. It was decided that all Thursday teams play in one division, and to allow Urenui to come into the Thursday competition. The Waitara club was granted permission to hold a tournament on Easter Monday. Nolantown and Riverlea were affiliated as a senior and junior team respectively. Riverlea was given provisional permission to use all black colours for this season. Nolantown was permitted to wear blue and white (halves). Stratford was allowed to change' from red and black hoops to red and black quarters. Stratford was given permission to reinstate several players as juniors. Monday, May 6, was allotted to Eitham for a 5-a-side tournament.
The suggestion of the Referees’ Association that referees’ expenses be met by the home team was considered at length and a motion in support of this principle was carried. ( It was decided to make application for a hockey match against the All-India hockey team for a mid-week match at a cost of £5O. 1
Applications for the match were received from the New Plymouth, Hawera and Eitham clubs and the match is to be held at New Plymouth. It was decided to open the competitions in the first week in May. Mr. Ebbett suggested . that practice matches should be held in preparation for the match with the .Indians. Mr. Page promised that New Plymouth would do everything' possible to make the match a success.
Reference to the departure shortly for Wairarapa of the Rev. Cuming, a keen supporter of hockey, was made by the chairman, who extended good wishes.
