POMEGRANATE FRUITS
TREE BEARING AT HAWERA. “ONE OF CHOICEST FRUITS.” . The fact that there was a pomegranate tree fruiting at Hawera was brought to the notice of t’-.e Daily News at Hawera yesterday by Mr. W. A. Quin, following the article in yesterday’s News with regard to the lone pomegranate at New Plymouth. Mr. Quin stated that Mr. Hugh Parsons, Regent Street, had at present a pomegranate tree bearing about a dozen half-grown fruit. Last year the same tree produced a few choice specimens, but unfortunately someone thought he had a better right to them than the grower and they disappeared as they were ripening. • The pomegranate, known as “granada” in Spain, was a semi-tropical fruit, and seldom came to maturity so far south. The .fruit when mature was as large as an orange and was considered to be one of the choicest edible fruits. The tree was a vigorous grower, but required a warm situation, as it would not stand ' heavy frosts. I ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. A dance on the new floor of the Okaiawa town hall will be held on Thursday next, March 14. Dancers are invited to attend and test the new floor.
