MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

DAISY REILLY MEMORIAL FUND. CONDITIONS OF AWARD DECIDED. The Daisy Reilly memorial fund stood at £250, including accrued interest, it was announced at a meeting of subscribers at Hawera on Wednesday evening. Mr. J. W. Velvin presided. In addition £lO had been awarded at the last Hawera Competitions Festival as a scholarship to Miss Jocelyn Purser. It was decided that the fund should be placed with the Public Trustee on permanent trust, and that the interest derived therefrom should be paid annually through the Hawera Competitions committee to the winner of the Daisy Reilly Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship would be awarded annually to the competitor chosen by the musical judge at the Hawera Corhpetitions as the most promising competitor in the musical sections of the festival, who resides in the South Taranaki district, including Opunake, Kaponga, Stratford and Waitotara. The competitions committee would be empowered to make the necessary regulations providing for the inclusion of such test examination or other conditions for the award of the scholarship as it might think fit. Messrs F. W. Sutton, J. E. Campbell and F. W. Homer were appointed a committee to settle the terms of trust with the Public Trustee and to execute any necessary.

Appreciative reference was made by the chairman and Mr. F. W. Horner to the services jwhich Mr. L. O. Hooker had rendered as organiser and treasurer of the fund.

POULTRY JUDGING.

DEMONSTRATION AT HAWERA. A demonstration of interest to poultrymen took place in the poultry hall at the Hawera winter show buildings on Wednesday night in conjunction with an amateur bird judging competition, Mr. D. Stewart, Normanby, being the demonstrator. There was a good attendance of members of the Hawera Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club and the public.

Judging took place before Mr. Stewart’s demonstration. The cards of the 19 entrants and that of Mr. Stewart were then compared and it was found that Mr. A. R. Watson, with two cards of 38 points each, and Mr. A. R. Hall, 38 points, had tied for first. The possible was 43 points. Judging took place on show and utility points. Mr. Stewart explained his placings and delivered a short address on the preparation of birds for show purposes. The visitors were welcomed by Mr. G. Harding, president of the club, who stressed the value of the demonstration in view of the club’s approaching young bird show. HAWERA ODDFELLOWS. LOYAL UNION LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Union Lodge, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, was held at Hawera on Tuesday. N.G. Bro, A. J. Clement presided over a good attendance of local members and approximately 80 visiting members representing other lodges throughout Taranaki. The officers were judged for the Taranaki ritual competition and a high standard was attained.

The district officers, Bros. H. A. Bennett, D.G.M., D. Sherson, D.D.G.M., S. Bolton (treasurer) and N. B. Bellringer (district secretary) paid their annual visit and each gave an interesting address concerning the Manchester Unity and friendly societies in general.

SWIMMING SPORTS RESULTS.

Additional results of events in connection with the Hawera Main school swimming sports are as follow:— 50 yards junior girls: L. Smith 1, M. Leece 2, K. Pratt 3.

50 yards senior girls: M. Syme 1, June Marter 2, Z. Strather 3. 50 yards junior boys: B. Clark 1, R. Dick 2, A. Veale 3. 75 yards senior boys: W. Linnell 1, D. McGlashan 2, M. Hayman 3. GENERAL ITEMS. Taiuigatara Cheesepunchers’ Ball. The Taungatara cheesepunchers’ ball, hi aid of the Opunake Surf Club, was held at Te Kiri on Tuesday There was a good attendance and the club benefited by a good sum. Hooker’s orchestra played the music, while extras were contributed by Miss V. West and Mr. Stuard Yarden. A cake (given by Mrs. Huwiler) was won by Mr. A. Crawford. Other competitions were won by Mr. D. Lind and Mr. Woolridge, and the other one by Mrs., Wemyss. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss McCallum and partner, and a Monte Carlo fox-trot by Miss I. Marshall and partner. On behalf of the surf club Mr. J. Clouston thanked the cheesepunchers and the public. Mr. A. Gilbert replied.

Route March. At 1.30 o'clock this afternoon the Hawera High School Cadet Corps, at present camping at the showgrounds, will undertake a route march through the streets of the town, headed by the school military band. The corps will proceed from Camberwell Road along High Street to the Memorial Arch in Princes Street where tribute will be paid, and back to camp.

Scientific Discussion. The Hawera Astronomical and Scientific Society met on Monday, Mr. J. W. Snowdon, Inaha, presiding over a good attendance of members and their friends. The subject was “Mount Egmont from its Geological Aspect,” by Mr. T. Taylor, Normanby. The address was well illustrated by maps and interesting discussion followed. WHAREROA PERSONALS. Mrs. Maule, who has been an inmate of a private hospital for some time is now making a good recovery and will soon be home.

Mr. Darcy Hicks has been indisposed for some time.

The small son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvine, who has been in hospital, is now well enough to return home. Mrs. G. Luscombe has left the hospital and is now the guest of Mrs. Hawthorne, where she intends staying till she is well enough to return to her home at Kapuni,
