INCREASED PENALTY

CONVERSION OF VEHICLES.

STATEMENT BY MINISTER. "It was my intention to introduce legislation last year increasing the penalty for the conversion of motor vehicles,;but unfortunately on account of the pressure of other legislation it was not possible to bring the measure down,” wrote the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Justice, in a letter to the North Island (N.Z.) Motor Union read at the monthly meeting of the Automobile Association (Taranaki) last night. • _ . The Minister had promised the Union that the necessary legislation would be introduced and when it was not introduced the Union had taken the matter up again with the Minister, his letter being the result. “As the present session is going to be devoted mainly to legislation of an emergency nature it is just questionable whether it will be possible to deal with this question during the present session,'but should it be at all practicable the legislation on the lines intended last year will be proceeded with,” stated the Minister. The letter was received.
