HAWERA FIREMEN RETURN. COMPETITIONS AT BLENHEIM. “Although we lost several trophies we were really not sorry,” declared Foreman E. Hart, of the Hawera Fire Brigade team which returned last night from the national gathering at Blenheim. In 1929, the last time the competitions were held, said Mr. Hart, Hawera won seven of eight trophies. If the same success had attended them this year it would have meant the end of the competition. Although the water pressure at Blenheim, said Mr. Hart, was much greater than at Hawera the team had practised without water at Hawera. The men were therefore too fast for the water, which
was slow in coming, and dropped points against teams with better combination. “We are not discouraged,” he said, “and the men put up a good performance.” The team, consisting of Foreman E. Hart, Secretary H. L. Warner, Firemen R. J. Gates and J. J. Peacock, was met on arrival in the mail train by the firemen in full dress from the station and by Messrs. J. E, Campbell, Mayor' of Hawera, and L. A. Bone, chairman of the Fire Board. Each paid tribute to the good work done, and cheers were given, Foreman Hart replying. Afterwards, on the brigade’s two engines, the firemen drove through the town.
