HIGH SCHOOL CAMP.

ANNUAL EVENT AT HAWERA.

CONTRIBUTIONS FROM BOYS. With a syllabus of training arranged to develop mentally, morally and physically the annual camp of the Hawera Technical High School boys commenced at the Hawera showgrounds yesterday morning. The work carried out while the boys are in camp is designed to train the boys to act to the best advantage either as individuals or in team work with others, and to fit the boys better for their work in school and after life.

Hawera is believed to be the only secondary school in New Zealand that has continued an annual camp on a voluntary basis since the reduction in the defence vote. The camp is made possible by subscriptions of a few shillings by each boy in the camp, and the generosity of several Hawera citizens has made it possible for a number of boys to enter camp who ■ would not otherwise have been able to have done so. There are over. 130 boys of the school in camp. Captain J. N. Henry, N.Z.S.C., is camp adjutant, and he has associated with him Captain H. G. Whitehead, Captain W. W. Thomas, Lieut. J. C. Findlater and Lieut. J. L. Thomson. There are also in camp. for the purpose of carrying out instructional work SergeantMajor J. L. Rowe, Sergeant-Major J. T. Bell, Sergeant J. A. Armstrong and Instructor W. E. Grogan. Staff Q.M.S. G. Quayle is quartermaster, and Dr. W. M. Thomson is the camp doctor. He examined the boys yesterday morning and gave the camp a clean bill of health. The preliminary arrangements were carried out yesterday morning, including the issue of camp equipment and the allocation of the boys to their tents. There was also a demonstration of bedmaking and instruction in the handling of equipment, and Sergeant-Major Rowe gave instruction in camp routine. The course which the boys will follow consists of company and physical drill and instruction of various kinds. There will be a swimming parade this morning and opportunity is given the boys to take part in the actual organised school sport. To-morrow will be visiting day, when the camp will be open to parents and friends in the afternoon.

The formation of a signal section is a feature of this year's camp. Captain Whitehead is in charge and it is proposed to carry out signalling by telegraph, flags and lamps. Mr. H. C. A. Fox will attend the camp to give instruction to members of the band. A Red Cross tent with two field hospital beds and all the necessary equipment is being conducted by boys who have first aid certificates. Two or three lectures will be delivered in the evenings by members of the Hawera Red Cross Society.

Tlje usual procedure with regard to Reveille and Retreat and the hauling up and down of the New Zealand ensign is being observed daily. The canteen is being conducted by the boys, and part of their entertainment in the evenings is being provided by a radio set lent by Mr. W. W. Davy. The camp is connected to the Hawera exchange by telephone.
