PICNIC AT WAVERLEY

PUPILS OF SUNDAY SCHOOL. St. Andrew’s Sunday school picnic, Waverley, was held amid beautiful surroundings of native bush. Mr. James Hunter kindly permitted the use of his property for the occasion. The children were conveyed to the grounds by motorlorries. The day being ideal there was a good attendance of children and parents.

W.D.F.U. GARDEN PARTY.

A garden party was held at “Redburn,” Matapu, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. Sharp, on Saturday afternoon for the community chest conducted by the local branch of the Women’s Division. The gardens were looking well, especially the dahlias. A tennis tournament was won by Miss Findlay and C. Calder. A cricket match resulted in an innings win for the married men against the single men. Competitions and stalls were conducted on the lawn. Winners of competitions were: Clock golf, Mrs. Luxton and Mrs. R. Wallis; nail-driving, Miss Lunam and Mr. W. Murphy; hat-trimming, Mr. B. Barclay; cushion, Mr. E. Freakley. Visitors were present from the Kapuni, Hunter Road and Okaiawa branches. The takings amounted to £7 and there should, be a good profit. Personal Items.

Mr. and Mrs. B. Barclay have returned from a holiday at Mokau.

Mr. and Mrs. R. Hooker and Mr. and Mrs. R. Guy have returned from Kawhia.

Mr. and Mrs. M. Wiltshire, New Plymouth, have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. Sharp. Miss A. Devon has returned to Wellington after spending a few weeks with Miss S. Gatenby.

ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS.

Tire number of inquiries received in connection with the tug-of-war tournament to be held at tfie Normanby show on Tuesday, March 12, indicates that the event will be most popular this year. The weight limit is 60 stone and the usual conditions will apply. Prizes of £5 first and £2 10s second are being given and, although these are smaller than often offered at such tournaments, the opportunity afforded teams to acquire practice early in the season prior to the larger events should be appreciated. Mr. Don Stewart will be the official judge at the Hawera Poultry Club’s , amateur judging competition and demonstration in the poultry hall, winter show buildings, Hawera, to-morrow evening. The public is invited, admission being free.
