BRUISED BATHERS

DRIFTWOOD FLOATING IN SEA. DAMAGE DONE AT OAKURA. Bruised bodies and limbs have been the reward of several bathers who have ventured into the sea after the recent Rood. Heavy logs and driftwood of all descriptions interfere with swimming. On the beaches along the coast dead fish, a stray animal or two and heaps of debris spoil the appearance of the shore. At Oakura the small stream running through the camp site burst its banks and flooded out all the cottages on the lower levels. The water in some cases rose as high as the beds. The river itself, formerly a trickle of water only an inch or so deep in a wide flat bed. has scoured out a path with banks about six feet high.
