OTAGO WINS EASILY

PLUNKET SHIELD HOLDER’S LOSS. OUTRIGHT DEFEAT AVOIDED. * By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. After further time had been lost through rain, the Plunket Shield cricket match between Canterbury, winner of the trophy,-and Otago was concluded at Carisbrook to-day. Otago won on the first innings. Though showers had fallen during the night, it was possible to resume play promptly at 11 o’clock, but showers drove players off the field for a few minutes during the morning and further rain caused an adjournment at 12.42, the resumption of play being delayed ' until 2.45. On the close of play in the morning, Otago, which had a lead of 107 runs on the first innings, closed its second innings with seven wickets down for 241, leaving Canterbury an impossible task in the time at its disposal of making 349 to win. At one stage it appeared that Otago might- be able to force an outright win but Canterbury stubbornly held out until 5.36, when owing to failing light stumps were drawn with five wickets down for 151. Under the rules of the shield contest, Otago secured a win on the first innings. Scores were:— OTAGO.
