SOLDIERS FROM THE SAAR FIRST BRITISH TROOPS WELCOME BY BIG CROWD TRIBUTES TO CONDUCT British Officials Wireless. Rec. 1 p.m. Rugby, Feb. 22. The first contingent of British troops who formed part of the international force in the Saar, consisting of the first Essex Regiment, marched across London this morning to entrain for their camp in Yorkshire. A great crowd greeted them on their arrival at Victoria station The men looked fit and cheerful. They wefe headed by their own band and by the band of the Irish Guards. The Times describes them as “peacetime victors” and pays tribute to the manner in which they performed their international task. It recalls the German Press tribute to their “unimpeachable attitude,” and says they had shown that good march discipline and a keen enjoyment of life can go very well together.
